Born in 1970 Inkie is considered a part of Bristol’s graffiti heritage alongside Banksy, 3D, and Nick Walker, he has become popular for combining art nouveau influences with an urban twist.

In 1989, the creative boom of graffiti was tackled head on by UK police in a raid codenamed ‘Operation Anderson’. They attempted to crack down on an artistic movement that had captured the punk ethos and imagination of thousands of youths, threatening to spiral out of control in a Thatcherite Britain. It was the largest UK graffiti bust on record and the ‘Kingpin’ of the movement was arrested, along with 72 other graffiti writers. That Kingpin’ was street artist, Inkie.

Named in Timeout’s Top 100 most influential UK creatives 2012, Tom Bingle aka Inkie, has emerged as one of the most prolific graffiti writers in UK history. He has painted with some of the most notorious artists in the scene, including Banksy, Nick Walker and Massive Attack’s 3D. Denounced as ‘Banksy’s right-hand man ‘by The Daily Mail, whilst simultaneously lauded by The Times, his work has been published in books such as Banksy’s Bristol, Children of the Can and Graffiti World. His much sought after pieces have gained a celebrity following, as well as featuring in respected magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ and Dazed & Confused.

He has also been part of several graffiti documentaries, including the infamous ‘Bomb It’. Inkies art is characterized by a unique collaboration of graffiti and figurative imagery. His widely recognized “Ink Nouveau’ style draws on Art Nouveau influences, with an unmistakable urban twist. Portraits of beautiful women are usually accompanied by intensive words or phrases; faces are understated almost anime and are framed with his iconic, stylized flowing hair. His works can be found on walls, Screen – prints and canvases, and his most recent, experiments include jewelry and repoussé.

As well as creating his own works, Inkie has also worked as head of design for SEGA Europe and Xbox and, worked as Jade Jagger’s in-house designer. He also runs a design studio creating artwork incorporating his beautiful trademark aesthetic on large-scale pieces.
